My VG Music Picks #51 – Be Cool, Be Wild, Be Groovy …for Icecap (Sonic Adventure)

If you heard this music without context, you wouldn’t think it would fit an ice-themed level, would you? And you’d be right. Icecap in Sonic Adventure is a much more platform-heavy level that requires you to take a slightly slower, more methodical approach to it… until you get to the snowboarding section that is. My VG Music Picks #50 – Battle! Ghetsis (Pokémon Black & White/Pokémon Black 2 & White 2)

WARNING: The following article contains spoilers for the following:

Pokémon Black & White
Pokémon Black 2 & White 2

Well, this is a first – two VG Music Picks in one! Why is that? Well, since this is technically the 50th one of these I’ve done, I figured I’d do something a little special. Plus, I can’t really write about one of these music tracks without mentioning the other. So, let’s quickly look at the two themes belonging to the main villain of the 5th Generation of Pokémon games. My VG Music Picks #49 – Footsteps of Time (Persona Q: Shadow of the Labyrinth)

WARNING: The following article contains spoilers for Persona Q: Shadow of the Labyrinth

One of the many reasons why I struggled playing Persona Q was because of the labyrinths. Exploring them eventually became such a drag, even the music gradually became monotonous to listen to, even if they were suitably atmospheric. That’s why I was very pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed the music for the final labyrinth. Continue reading

My VG Music Picks #45 – Calamari Inkantation (Splatoon)

WARNING: The following article contains spoilers for Splatoon

While I was never able to get into Splatoon‘s multiplayer (you know, the main draw of the game) as much as I would’ve liked, I don’t regret getting it, if only to help support a new IP with a tonne of potential. That, and the single-player was actually pretty good, with the final boss fight being the highlight. I didn’t know what to expect, but it certainly wasn’t an evil octopus DJ. Continue reading

My VG Music Picks #44 – Trip through Sequin Land (Shantae and the Pirate’s Curse)

I only recently got around to giving the Shantae games a shot and, while not mind-blowing levels of good, I certainly enjoyed what I played and I see why so many love this series. I’m not sure if starting with the third game in the series was a good idea, but I had heard good reviews and was able to get it on the Wii U at a discount and figured “Eh, why not?”

I certainly dug the game’s aesthetics – a sort of modern take on the retro 8-bit style – and developer Wayforward had brought back composer Jake Kaufman (who had worked on several of their previous games) to provide the tunes. Kaufman seems to be one of those composers who can do now wrong in the eyes of fans. Don’t believe me? Then just listen to this piece. Continue reading

My VG Music Picks #43 – The Battle for Everyone’s Souls (Shin Megami Tensei: Persona 3)

WARNING: The following article contains spoilers for Shin Megami Tensei: Persona 3

I’ve discussed my love for Persona 3‘s final boss before (along with all the other reasons I enjoyed that game), and one of the reasons I love it so much, despite its length, is the music that accompanies it – The Battle for Everyone’s Souls. God, even the song title is cool! Continue reading

Ten of My Favourite Music Tracks from Project X Zone 2

WARNING: The following article contains spoilers for Project X Zone 2

One aspect I didn’t mention in the Project X Zone 2 review was its soundtrack. As a crossover of many gaming franchises, it naturally draws most of its music from those franchises and gives them fancy new remixes. The first game did the same thing but, due to licensing issues, a lot of tracks had to be replaced (and some just flat-out removed) for the Western release.

PXZ 2, however, managed to avoid this pitfall and we were gifted with an untouched, complete soundtrack (though Japan still got an exclusive pre-order that offered the original versions of the remixes which sucks but what are you gonna do?). So, to continue the trend of me pretending I know what I’m talking about when it comes to music, here’s a quick list of ten of my favourite music tracks from the game. And believe me when I say that this list was much harder to make than the last one. Seriously, this is a really good soundtrack. Continue reading
