The thing with some character themes is that, after a while, it’s hard to explain why they fit the character in question. They’ve been associated with that character for so long that it just works, with no proper explanation. When you hear that track, you immediately think of the character. For me, Ryu’s theme is the perfect example of that. Continue reading

My VG Music Picks #27 – Fool or Clown? (Persona 4 Arena Ultimax)
WARNING: The following article contains spoilers for Persona 4 and Persona 4 Arena Ultimax
I have a funny relationship with most fighting games. I’m terrible at them and whenever a new one is announced, I barely bat an eyelid unless it’s Super Smash Bros. At the same time, however, a lot of them have certain aspects that greatly appeal to me and make me want to play them, even though I’d get fed up with them in a couple of days because I just can’t learn how the damn controls work. When Persona 4 Arena came out, I very nearly caved. A follow-up to one of my favourite RPGs ever? Like, a direct sequel story-wise? If it wasn’t for the fact that I wouldn’t have had much fun playing it, I would’ve bought it.
Then the sequel got announced. I wasn’t worried though. If Atlus couldn’t convince me to buy the first one, what made them think I’d get a sequel? The answer was simple. Bring back my favourite character and make them playable. A character so spoiler-y, that I’ve had to hide the video after the “continue reading” bit. Continue reading
My VG Music Picks #26 – Lavender Town (Pokémon Red/Blue/Yellow)
Pokémon, at it’s core, is ultimately a thing for kids. When you glance at the advertising, the simple gameplay and the cuddly creatures that populate the many regions, you think to yourself “Yeah, I know some children that would love this.” But every once in a while, something will occur that causes those same wide-eyed innocent kids, with a dream to be the very best like no one ever was, to shit themselves. For many of us aficionados of Pokémon, that very first moment was in the original games. Continue reading
My VG Music Picks #25 – Believe me (Steins;Gate)
Last week, I wrote a review on the visual novel Steins;Gate, but I realised after the fact that I didn’t go into it’s music at all. To be fair, I wouldn’t call the soundtrack the greatest. It’s not a bad one; just one that I don’t really remember all that well. It serves its purpose well and creates atmosphere, but there were a few tracks that stood out to me. Especially this one. Continue reading
My VG Music Picks #24 – Decalburg (Paper Mario: Sticker Star)
Paper Mario: Sticker Star is one of those things that simply remembering that it exists makes me kind of angry. It was so disappointing and so boring to play that I couldn’t even be asked to finish it. There are only a few positive things that I have to say about it – it’s music being one of them, like this track.

My VG Music Picks #23 -Turnabout Sisters ~ Music Box Melody (Professor Layton VS Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney)
WARNING: The following article contains spoilers for Professor Layton VS Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney
Professor Layton VS Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney got so much right. It was one of those games that I was super hyped for and it managed to surpass all of my lofty expectations. It had so many memorable moments that I hope to never forget; one of them being the scene accompanied by this week’s music pick. Continue reading
My VG Music Picks #22 – Laser Beam (Persona Q: Shadow of the Labyrinth)
I’m honestly annoyed with how little progress I’ve made with Persona Q: Shadow of the Labyrinth. Despite having so many aspects that I absolutely love, I haven’t been able to consistently play it in the last year because I don’t really enjoy its core gameplay. Which is such a damn shame since I love everything else, particularly its battle music. Continue reading
My VG Music Picks #21 -Stepping Wind (Klonoa 2: Lunatea’s Veil)
When we think of snowy or winter-themed levels of videogames, the music is usually relatively soft or calming; it tends to create a sense of tranquility. That’s why, in retrospect, it’s kind of weird that the first level in the snow-topped mountains of Mira-Mira in Klonoa 2 has this energetic, fast-paced rock song. Continue reading
My VG Music Picks #20 – Skyloft (Hyrule Warriors)
If I wasn’t a Legend of Zelda fan by the time Hyrule Warriors came out, I probably would’ve been after sampling it because, my God, it looked awesome and managed to live up to said awesomeness. This included possibly the most metal soundtrack we’d ever hear in a Zelda game. Continue reading
My VG Music Picks #19 – Star Wolf (Star Fox 64)
I’m honestly not a Star Fox fan. Nothing against the series; it just doesn’t interest me. But if there’s one thing I’m glad that exists because of this series, it’s this piece of music. Continue reading
