My VG Music Picks #10 – DK Rap (Donkey Kong 64)

(originally posted April 24th 2015)

When people talk about videogame music, it’s usually the tracks that inspire them; the tracks that get an emotion out of them or even tracks that cause nostalgia. This track does none of those things – it’s just frigging stupid, and that’s why I love it.

So many questions are raised by its mere existence. What was the thought process behind this? Whose initial idea was it? Did whoever write the lyrics have a straight face the whole time they were writing it? One thing I am sure of, though, is that they had so much fun making this daft piece of music. It did get a remix in Super Smash Bros. Melee but it paled in comparison to the original (partly because I can barely make out the lyrics in the remix).

Most savvy gamers who have been on the Internet for long enough know of its existence, but for the few of you who may have never heard of it, I welcome you. It doesn’t matter if you genuinely love it, love it because it’s goofy or maybe even dislike it – you just know about it, and you’ll now get all those jokes about being the first member of the DK Crew and having a funny face.
