Ten Characters I Want in Super Smash Bros

Who should be playable in the next Super Smash Bros? It’s a question that many have asked and even more have answered. Every time a new instalment is announced, people immediately begin debating as to who should make the cut. No other fighting game series seems to generate this much discussion. Smash Bros is kind of like the videogame equivalent of Hollywood; everyone’s desperate to make it there. Continue reading

My VG Music Picks #7 – Battle! Brendan / May (Pokémon Omega Ruby & Alpha Sapphire)

(originally posted March 6th 2015)

No matter how many Pokémon games there have been and no matter how many there will be, there are and always will be some constants. One of them being your rival, a recurring character who will randomly catch you off guard to challenge you. You can’t really prepare for them since their team is usually balanced as opposed to the Gym Leaders; there’s no one Pokémon you can take advantage of. It’s one of the true tests of skill and it requires some hype music to accompany it. Continue reading

The Legend of Zelda TV Series – Can It Work?

(originally posted February 13th 2015)

The Wall Street Journal recently reported that a live-action Legend of Zelda series was in the works, and that Netflix of all people would be the one to make it. Neither Netflix nor Nintendo have said anything about the matter (I wouldn’t be surprised if this turns out to be false or gets canned before anything even happens) but it does make me wonder: could a TV show based on one of Nintendo’s most popular franchises work? Continue reading

My VG Music Picks #3 – Frosty Village (Diddy Kong Racing)

(originally posted December 26th 2014)

It’s been years since I’ve played Diddy Kong Racing but whenever I try to think of music from it, this theme is one of the few that comes to mind. The Frosty Village racecourse wasn’t a particular favourite of mine; it was decent but definitely rather simple compared to some of the other courses. I think it’s the music, though, that helps make it stand out. Continue reading

My Seven Favourite Super Smash Bros Newcomers

(originally posted December 19th 2014)

Both of the new Super Smash Bros games are finally out and we could not be happier. The series is loved for a number of reasons, but probably the big one is seeing which characters get the honour of becoming playable and getting the opportunity to duke it out with Nintendo’s biggest stars. We all have our preferences, so here are my personal favourites of the fifteen newcomers from the latest games. Continue reading

Hyrule Warriors – The Most Metal Zelda Game Yet

(originally posted September 26th 2014)

The Dynasty Warriors series is one that may be very fun to play, but doesn’t really grab me. The setting of ancient China can really only appeal to those interested in the culture. So, what’s the best way of getting someone like me to play it? The answer: dress it all up in Legend of Zelda clothing.

I’m admittedly not the biggest Zelda fan (having only played five games in the series) but the image of Link cutting down swarms of Moblins with the grandest of spin attacks was enough to get my attention, and as more details emerged over the months, it looked more and more enticing. But now the game’s out, is it as awesome as it looks? Continue reading

Ten Pokémon That Should Be in Pokkén Tournament

(originally posted September 12th 2014)

With the announcement of a ‘Pokémon’ fighting game being developed by Namco Bandai, there is much excitement to see which mons will make the cut, for good reason. Even as someone who sucks at most fighting games, being able to control some of my favourite Pokémon in a ‘Tekken’ style fighter is something I can totally get behind. So, here are my personal picks of potential playable Pokémon. Continue reading

Eight Characters That Should Be in Mario Kart

(originally posted May 16th 2014)

We’re less than a month away from ‘Mario Kart 8’ hitting the shelves and I don’t think I’ve ever seen so much hype for a new ‘Mario Kart’ before. Since its announcement at E3 last year, we’ve slowly but surely seen more of it and I have certainly become more and more excited. But if there’s one thing I have to take issue with, it’s Nintendo’s choice of characters.

Now, ‘Mario Kart’ isn’t exactly something you play for its playable characters, unlike a fighting game like ‘Super Smash Bros’ but as the cast has grown, certain characters have unexpectedly cropped up… and not in the good way. ‘MK8’ will star many fan favourites but the rest are a bit of a head scratcher. All seven of the Koopalings? Are they really that popular? Baby Rosalina? Do we really need another baby version of an existing character? Even Baby Daisy was pushing it. And Pink Gold Peach? You’re not even trying with that one.

It wouldn’t be so bad if there wasn’t a far richer selection of Mushroom Kingdom inhabitants to choose from. So, here’s my personal pick of new and old racers that should be allowed onto the racecourse.

GBA Games on Wii U Virtual Console – Why?

(originally posted April 11th 2014)

I’m just gonna say that the Virtual Console is possibly one of Nintendo’s best ideas. The ability to download classic games from the days when gaming was nothing more than a niche, little club is just genius. Not only does it allow gamers to relive some of their favourite titles from when they were growing up but it also introduces these classics to a new generation. The youth of today can now experience the kind of games their parents or other older relatives used to play. I myself would love to purchase more titles off the VC, having already got games like ‘Paper Mario’ and ‘Kirby 64.’
