When it comes to music for spooky or haunted areas, you usually get something slow and ominous. Something atmospheric; not the sort of thing you’d blast out of your radio whilst cruising down a highway. But you can’t have something like that for a racing game, especially one starring Sonic the Hedgehog – a character who’s whole thing is going really fast. Back when Team Sonic Racing was first teased with an incredibly vague and short trailer, I wasn’t exactly impressed or excited. At the time, Sonic Forces had left me rather bitter about how Sega was handling the series, and I didn’t think they had earned enough goodwill to only hint at a new title and expect me to be invested. However, as time passed and more info was revealed, I was eventually coaxed back like a badger out of its sett. The fact that Sega had brought Sumo Digital on board to develop it was the primary reason since I really enjoyed their last two Sega-themed racing games, especially Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed.
But there was still some scepticism, and I wasn’t the only one. The focus was entirely on Sonic and friends this time and, rather than do what every other mascot kart racer did and just copy and paste Mario Kart, Sumo Digital were doing something very different and making a racing game where players would race in teams and have to work together in order to win. It was certainly a unique premise, but after being consistently disappointed by so many Sonic games over the last few years, there was this constant fear that I was setting myself up to be let down again.
So is Team Sonic Racing a worthy Mario Kart alternative? Is it even as good as Sumo Digital’s previous work? Or is it just a gimmicky failure? Continue reading
Last week on the Entertainment Dome, James and I had a very rambly session, where we discuss the newly announced Pokémon games, James expresses his disappointment with Anthem and I try not to talk about the live-action Sonic the Hedgehog movie.
A new Super Smash Bros. game is on the way, which means the Internet is rife once more with debates and theories as to which new characters will get the chance to duke it out with Nintendo’s greatest all-stars. Though now the discussion has changed slightly thanks to the introduction of Echo Fighters.
While it might just be a fancy new term for the long maligned clone characters, people seem to have accepted this idea with fondness. This feature means we can have new characters easily join the roster as glorified palette swaps while still retaining their original personalities. So far, we have Lucina, Dark Pit and newcomer Daisy acting as Echo Fighters for Marth, Pit and Peach respectively, and fans are already wondering if we’ll see any more show up.
Of course, I have some ideas of my own that I’d love to see. So even if we don’t get any new, original characters, here are ten Echo Fighters whose inclusion would make me more than happy. Continue reading
After a hiatus of sorts that was born from the unmitigated disaster known as Sonic Boom: Rise of Lyric, 2017 was set to be the year of Sonic the Hedgehog’s return. And while most eyes were focused on Sonic Mania, – a nostalgic throwback to his glory days in the 90s – my attention was placed squarely on his new 3D outing, Sonic Forces. If Mania was specifically designed to pander to Classic Sonic fans, Forces seemed to be doing the same for those who grew up with the more recent titles, such as myself.
Even when early previews were quite negative, I remained optimistic that while the game might not be the same level of quality as, say, Sonic Generations, it’d at the very least provide me with plenty of enjoyment and help usher in a new age of good 3D Sonic games. This week on The Entertainment Dome, we’re still complaining about the Ace Attorney anime and loving/hating Danganronpa 3. But we DO talk about actual news later on; specifically Telltale’s “multiplayer” announcement, the latest NX rumours and the two new Sonic the Hedgehog games.
As I mentioned in the Dancing All Night review, I’ve developed a fondness for rhythm-action games over the last few years. I can’t quite pinpoint where it started nor can I say why I enjoy playing them. Maybe it’s because I feel like I’m contributing to the music itself despite not being musically inclined at all.
Regardless of the reason, games like Dancing All Night make me yearn for other videogames to get a similar treatment – their own rhythm-action spin-offs that celebrate their glorious soundtracks. So, here’s a short dream list of the five games that deserve priority. Continue reading
