Oh, Marvel vs Capcom, I can’t play you to save my life but I love you as a concept. And while I’m aware some people had issues with the third installment in this crazy crossover series, it still looked like a pretty solid and enjoyable game to me. Though I can’t personally critique it’s gameplay, however, I can at least compliment its music, like this piece. Continue reading

My VG Music Picks #37 – Battle! Lysandre (Pokémon X & Y)
WARNING: The following article contains spoilers for Pokémon X and Pokémon Y
As far as Pokémon villains go, I honestly think Team Flare from Pokémon X & Y is the worst we’ve had. They were just so uninteresting and pathetically easy to fight (though, to be fair, the whole game was pretty easy), and that extends to their leader, Lysandre, as well. On the plus side, listen to this music that plays when you battle him. Continue reading
My VG Music Picks #36 – Village of Whispers (Killer Instinct)
Is it possible for a song to be both scary and awesome? If this piece from the rebooted Killer Instinct is anything to go by, the answer is yes and it’s perfectly fitting for the resurrected Japanese spirit that is Hisako. Continue reading
My VG Music Picks #35 – Vs Street Fighter Rivals Arrange #1 (Street Fighter X Tekken)
I know many were incredibly disappointed with how Street Fighter X Tekken ultimately turned out, but there were still a few elements that I still enjoy even now. For instance, the rival fights. If you play through the Arcade Mode with a “canon” team, like Ryu and Ken or Kazuya and Nina, you’ll get into a rival fight, prefaced by a short cutscene of the two teams confronting each other.
Granted, these scenes weren’t anything particularly special but were mildly entertaining at the very least. But my favourite part was the music that played. If you were playing as a Street Fighter duo, you’d fight your rival to a Tekken remix and vice versa. And for my money, the first variant of the Street Fighter rival theme is easily my favourite. Continue reading
My VG Music Picks #34 – Wave Ocean – The Water’s Edge (Sonic the Hedgehog (2006))
Sonic the Hedgehog for Xbox 360 and PS3 was a disaster. There is no good defense for this game; even ten years after its release, the vast majority consider this to be one of the darkest moments in Sonic’s history. A moment that very nearly killed him. But, despite the justifiable hate this game has received, there seems to be one thing that we all seem to agree on – it had some fantastic music. Continue reading
My VG Music Picks #33 – Hikari -KINGDOM Orchestra Instrumental Version- (Kingdom Hearts)
You ever have one of those pieces of music that just brings a smile to your face every time you hear it? For me, this is easily one of those tracks. Despite it technically being an orchestral cover of the first game’s main theme, Simple and Clean, I’ve always treated this as its own track; one that represents the entirety of the franchise. Continue reading
My VG Music Picks #32 – The Grand Finale (Mario & Luigi: Bowser’s Inside Story)
WARNING: The following article contains spoilers for Mario & Luigi: Bowser’s Inside Story
When it comes to writing for these VG Music Picks articles, I impose a couple of rules on myself that determine what pieces of music I cover. One such rule is “can I write a couple of paragraphs where I can justify why I like the music based solely on the music whilst also sounding as pretentious as possible?” I like to think I do a decent enough job pretending like I know what I’m talking about when it comes to music but, sometimes, it’s hard to justify why I like a particular track. Sometimes, it’s just good. Continue reading
My VG Music Picks #31 – Title Theme (DuckTales: Remastered)
Is this cheating? Possibly but, in case you didn’t know, the theme song to Disney’s DuckTales cartoon was one of the raddest things to ever exist. Anyone who grew up with the show will testify to how catchy it was – it was arguably the main reason why people watched it. So when it came to making a DuckTales videogame, what else would serve as music for the game’s title screen? Continue reading
My VG Music Picks #30 – Apollo Justice ~ A New Chapter of Trials! 2013 (Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney – Dual Destinies)
I was never a fan of Apollo Justice. He wasn’t a bad character, per se, but there wasn’t really anything about him that stood out. He was uninteresting and underdeveloped, and the fact that he wound up being completely overshadowed in his own game didn’t help his case. Despite that, when Dual Destinies was announced, I hoped that he would return. Continue reading
My VG Music Picks #29 – Magikarp Festival (Pokkén Tournament)
I may not be the very best like no one ever was at it, but Pokkén Tournament is a very fun fighting game, especially if your a fan of the kid-friendly cock-fighting franchise. One problem it has, though, is that due to all the flashy moves, bright colours and hard-hitting sound effects, it’s hard to notice the pretty decent soundtrack it’s got. Take this track for example. Continue reading
