RWBY Volume 2 – More Mistakes or Impressive Improvement?

WARNING: The following article contains spoilers for RWBY Volume 2

RWBY_volume_2_bluray_combo

Last year, I wrote a review on the first volume of RWBY, the online animated smash hit of RoosterTeeth and the creation of the late, great Monty Oum. I had always planned to review the second volume once it was complete and with Volume 3 already several episodes in, I figured it was now or never. Let’s get things started and review the good and bad of RWBY Volume 2. Continue reading

Batman: Arkham Knight – The Story of How the Batman Died… OR DOES HE?

batman_arkham_knight_a_l

Batman. Who doesn’t know Batman? Who doesn’t like Batman? I’ve never met a single person that didn’t like Batman in some capacity. Batman is infamous and loved in pretty much every medium: comics, films, TV and, of course, video games.

Though for the longest time, there was never really a ‘true’ Batman game. Not to say there weren’t any good Batman games but I don’t think there was ever a game where you actually felt like Batman. The World’s Greatest Detective, the master of hand-to-hand combat, the stealthy ninja that could take out a room full of armed guards without being seen; were there any games like that?

That all changed, however, in 2009 when developer Rocksteady released Batman: Arkham Asylum, a title that came out of seemingly nowhere and took everybody by surprise, much like Batman himself. It received critical acclaim and pretty much put Rocksteady on the map due to it being the first time where players weren’t just playing a videogame that had Batman in it – they were Batman.

This single game sparked an entire series of Batman games; the latest of which being the grand finale, Batman: Arkham Knight (though I doubt Warner Bros will let an easy money maker like this end). Is it as awesome as its marketing makes it out to be? Let’s find out (BTW, I’m reviewing the PS4 version). Continue reading

Zero Escape: Virtue’s Last Reward – A Super, Smart, Scary, Suspenseful Story

Virtue's_Last_Reward_3DS_Boxart

Zero Escape: Virtue’s Last Reward is possibly one of my favourite videogames of all time. I was actually surprised by how much I loved it since I only got it on a bit of a whim. It had received good reviews, particularly for its story, and I’m a sucker for a good story, so I figured I’d give it a shot. Little did I know what I was getting into. And with its sequel now on its way, what better time than to convince you lot to play it? … Well, probably when it first came out but I can’t time travel. Now, sit yourself down and get ready for the long haul because there’s a lot to get through, starting with the concept and plot. Continue reading

Big Hero 6 – Super Hero or Super Zero?

(WARNING: The following article contains spoilers for Big Hero 6 and Frozen)

The latest animated Disney film, Big Hero 6, is now out on DVD and the like, meaning I finally had a chance to watch it after months of everybody telling me that I needed to see it. I was honestly surprised by how much everyone seemed to like it. With Frozen still making the rounds despite being over two years old, I was worried that Big Hero 6 would kind of just pass everyone by; instantly dismissed by little kids everywhere just because it wasn’t Frozen. Fortunately, that wasn’t the case. Continue reading

Paddington – Beary Good

(originally posted May 8th 2015)

When I found out that a live-action movie based on Paddington Bear was being made, I was naturally sceptical. And so was everyone else, apparently. I know one shouldn’t jump to conclusions but just the idea that someone wanted to make a live-action Paddington movie in 2014 just made me gag a little. I don’t hold a lot of nostalgia for Paddington but I remember catching a few episodes of the original TV series where Paddington himself was animated in stop-motion but the humans and his environments were in 2D, and I even had an audio tape of some of the original stories. It may have only been a small part of my childhood but I remembered it fondly and, naturally, me and the rest of the world weren’t holding our breath for a ‘modernised’ take on the character. Even the author of the original books, Michael Bond, wasn’t looking forward to it. Continue reading

The Wolf Among Us – Not Big but Definitely Not Bad

(originally posted February 27th 2015)

I’ve got to give credit to TellTale. They managed to not only sucker me into playing The Walking Dead, a game of a franchise I avoided for so long due to my prejudice against zombies and post-apocalypse stories, but make me love it too. When all was said and done though I naturally craved more point-and-click goodness; then I remembered another game they made called The Wolf Among Us. One quick Google Search later and I knew I had to check it out. And boy, am I glad I did. Continue reading

Remember Me – Cherished Memory or Totally Forgettable?

(originally posted January 23rd 2015)

Sometimes all it takes is an idea to get me to play a game. It could seem relatively minor but the very notion is enough to grab my interest. For Remember Me, it was the ability to enter a person’s memory and alter it. I can’t remember exactly where I heard about it but it made me want to give the game a go, despite its mixed reviews. Having now played it, though, is the game itself any good? Continue reading

Project X Zone – Three Game Companies, One Kickass Crossover

(originally posted October 3rd 2014)

In October 2012, Project X Zone, a tactical RPG, was released in Japan for the Nintendo 3DS. That following year, we Westerners were fortunate enough to receive the game ourselves, despite less than stellar sales. Opinion on this game is noticeably mixed; those who have played it either love it for what it is or find it rather dull. I am one of the former. I adore this game for a multitude of reasons and I wish more people were aware of it. It did manage to sell ten times more in the West than the publishers, Bandai Namco, were expecting but it’s hardly a household name; even amongst gamers it’s probably overlooked. So, I’m dedicating this whole month to one of my all-time favourite games, and by the end of this, you’ll hopefully be convinced to give a game a shot. Continue reading

The Lego Movie – Everything Is Indeed Awesome

(originally posted September 19th 2014)

(WARNING: This post contains spoilers for The Lego Movie)

I love this movie. I love it so damn much. It wasn’t always like that, though. When I first found out that a Lego movie was being made, I rolled my eyes and let out one hell of an exasperated sigh. The film synopsis didn’t inspire confidence. It sounded like the most generic child pandering I’d ever heard. Then the trailers came out. “Huh?” I thought, “This doesn’t look that bad. Actually seems pretty funny.” So, I watched it, expecting a basic but entertaining romp. What did I get? Something amazing. So here’s a list of everything that is awesome with this movie. Despicable Me 2 – Something a Bit More Conventional

(originally posted September 5th 2014)

As soon as I finished watching ‘Despicable Me,’ I immediately jumped over to the sequel. Usually, sequels nowadays make me slightly wary, especially for films aimed at younger audiences. It’s just all too easy for the film makers to just do the same thing again and rehash all the popular jokes. But, ‘Despicable Me 2’ is more akin to the likes of ‘Toy Story 2’ and ‘Shrek 2’ in that it actually succeeds in being not only as good as the first film, but maybe even better. Continue reading
