My VG Music Picks #79 – Boss Battle (Learn with Pokémon: Typing Adventure)

There have arguably been much weirder Pokémon spin-offs that have been made, especially at the time of writing (Pokémon Sleep? Really? That’s a thing?), but I distinctly remember raising an eyebrow when this one got announced. At the end of the day, it’s ultimately harmless – an edutainment title packaged with a DS-compatible keyboard and designed to help kids learn how to spell and touch type via catching Pokémon. As big of a Pokémon fan as I am, I passed on it since it didn’t really appeal to me, and I imagine a lot of people felt the same way. But then someone discovered the boss music. Continue reading

My VG Music Picks #68 – N’s Room (Pokémon Black 2 & White 2)

WARNING: The following article contains spoilers for the following:

Pokémon Black & White
Pokémon Black 2 & White 2

While this track technically appeared in Pokémon Black & White first, I decided to focus on the version that appeared in the sequel games since 1. it’s the version that’s on the official OSTs and 2. I think this version’s way creepier, which is fitting given what month I’m writing this in. However, I will be writing about the context the music is used from the first games since, well, that’s where said context comes from and it isn’t really touched upon all that much in the sequels. Anyway, enough rambling, let’s move on. Continue reading

Favourite Moments in Fiction #15 – The Ferris Wheel Chase (Professor Layton and the Curious Village)

WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Professor Layton and the Curious Village

Following on from last week’s VG Music Pick, let’s take a quick look at what could be argued as being one of the most iconic scenes from the first Professor Layton game. Hell, you could probably make an argument that it’s one of the most iconic scenes in the franchise and helped set an example for how action scenes in the series worked. Continue reading

My VG Music Picks #67 – Professor Layton’s Theme (Professor Layton and the Curious Village)

I’m actually kind of shocked that it’s taken me this long to write about some music from the Professor Layton series, especially the good old prof’s theme music itself. The series became an instant favourite of mine when it launched back in 2008 thanks to its range of interesting and brain-taxing puzzles, lovely visuals, wonderful characters, off-the-wall storytelling and, of course, atmospheric music. And while Layton’s theme has remained relatively unchanged throughout the series, there’s a very good reason for that – it’s perfect already. Continue reading

My VG Music Picks #50 – Battle! Ghetsis (Pokémon Black & White/Pokémon Black 2 & White 2)

WARNING: The following article contains spoilers for the following:

Pokémon Black & White
Pokémon Black 2 & White 2

Well, this is a first – two VG Music Picks in one! Why is that? Well, since this is technically the 50th one of these I’ve done, I figured I’d do something a little special. Plus, I can’t really write about one of these music tracks without mentioning the other. So, let’s quickly look at the two themes belonging to the main villain of the 5th Generation of Pokémon games. Random Rankings – The Kingdom Hearts Series

WARNING: The following article contains spoilers for the Kingdom Hearts series

Kingdom_Hearts_Characters

If you really think about it, Kingdom Hearts is one of the weirdest success stories ever. I mean, it’s a Disney/Final Fantasy crossover. This is the kind of thing you’d see in fan-fictions from the mid-2000s; not a professionally made videogame series. Yet, somehow, it worked and has a large following of dedicated fans the world over – me being one of them.

While it’s certainly had its ups and downs, I still wholeheartedly love this series, despite my personal gripes with it, and am more than excited for when Kingdom Hearts III inevitably drops (whenever that is). In the meantime, I’ve decided to go through the entire series thus far to see how each entry stacks up against each other. Which games do I adore with all my heart and which ones do I wish I could cast into the darkness? Let’s find out together, shall we? Continue reading

My VG Music Picks #32 – The Grand Finale (Mario & Luigi: Bowser’s Inside Story)

WARNING: The following article contains spoilers for Mario & Luigi: Bowser’s Inside Story

When it comes to writing for these VG Music Picks articles, I impose a couple of rules on myself that determine what pieces of music I cover. One such rule is “can I write a couple of paragraphs where I can justify why I like the music based solely on the music whilst also sounding as pretentious as possible?” I like to think I do a decent enough job pretending like I know what I’m talking about when it comes to music but, sometimes, it’s hard to justify why I like a particular track. Sometimes, it’s just good. Continue reading

My VG Music Picks #18 – Pursuit ~ Cornered (Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney)

There are many reasons for an Ace Attorney fan to get excited for a new game. One of them is what the new Pursuit theme will sound like. Every game has had one and they are usually one of the best tracks. While this music pick might not be my favourite iteration, it’s easily the most recognisable, the most iconic and it was the first. Continue reading
