My VG Music Picks #49 – Footsteps of Time (Persona Q: Shadow of the Labyrinth)

WARNING: The following article contains spoilers for Persona Q: Shadow of the Labyrinth

One of the many reasons why I struggled playing Persona Q was because of the labyrinths. Exploring them eventually became such a drag, even the music gradually became monotonous to listen to, even if they were suitably atmospheric. That’s why I was very pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed the music for the final labyrinth. Continue reading

The Entertainment Dome Episode 61 – Gotta Disappoint ‘Em All

This week on The Entertainment Dome, the latest Attack on Titan leaves me reeling with its revelations, we defend Nintendo’s recent Direct on Pokémon and we discuss the potential for the upcoming Final Fantasy fighting game for PS4.

Ten of My Favourite Music Tracks from Project X Zone 2

WARNING: The following article contains spoilers for Project X Zone 2

One aspect I didn’t mention in the Project X Zone 2 review was its soundtrack. As a crossover of many gaming franchises, it naturally draws most of its music from those franchises and gives them fancy new remixes. The first game did the same thing but, due to licensing issues, a lot of tracks had to be replaced (and some just flat-out removed) for the Western release.

PXZ 2, however, managed to avoid this pitfall and we were gifted with an untouched, complete soundtrack (though Japan still got an exclusive pre-order that offered the original versions of the remixes which sucks but what are you gonna do?). So, to continue the trend of me pretending I know what I’m talking about when it comes to music, here’s a quick list of ten of my favourite music tracks from the game. And believe me when I say that this list was much harder to make than the last one. Seriously, this is a really good soundtrack. Continue reading

Project X Zone 2 – The Best Videogame Crossover Ever?

project_x_zone_thumbnail

Back in October 2014 (a time when I was still writing this stuff on Tumblr), I dedicated the entire month to writing articles about Project X Zone, a crossover, tactical RPG on the 3DS featuring characters from Capcom, Sega and Namco franchises. It quickly became one of my favourite games ever upon playing it and I just wanted, nay, needed to express that love somewhere (you can check out said articles here). So, you can probably guess how I felt when a sequel was announced (spoilers: there was a lot of screaming).

Said sequel, Project X Zone 2, was released in the West in February 2016 so, one year later, I’m doing this shit again because (unsurprisingly) I love the sequel too. But is it an improvement over its predecessor or is it just the same game with only the most minute of differences? Well, that’s what a review’s for, isn’t it? Continue reading

My VG Music Picks #37 – Battle! Lysandre (Pokémon X & Y)

WARNING: The following article contains spoilers for Pokémon X and Pokémon Y

As far as Pokémon villains go, I honestly think Team Flare from Pokémon X is the worst we’ve had. They were just so uninteresting and pathetically easy to fight (though, to be fair, the whole game was pretty easy), and that extends to their leader, Lysandre, as well. On the plus side, listen to this music that plays when you battle him. Continue reading

Kirby: Planet Robobot – Get in the Robot, Kirby!

Kirby-Planet-Robobot-illu

It’s weird how quickly fans of the Kirby series were willing to accept the idea of the pink puffball piloting a robot. Normally, a deviation from the norm is a sure-fire way to incite unwarranted anger in people. I mean, look at some other franchises.

When The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker was announced with its cel-shaded graphics and kid-friendly appearance, it was immediately deemed by some fans as the worst game ever. When Banjo & Kazooie made their triumphant return with some weird racing-but-not-really-racing game, gamers everywhere vomited profusely at the mere sight of it. And do I even need to mention how nearly every Sonic the Hedgehog game since the early 2000s splits the fanbase in half?

Yet with this title, Kirby: Planet Robobot, nobody seemed to have a bad thing to say about the idea. I’m sure there’s at least one person who saw the inclusion of a robot as some kind of assault on their childhood but I personally never saw any criticism regarding the concept. But was all this acceptance well placed? Were we right to be so confident in this new idea? Well, that’s what this review’s all about. Continue reading

My VG Music Picks #30 – Apollo Justice ~ A New Chapter of Trials! 2013 (Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney – Dual Destinies)

I was never a fan of Apollo Justice. He wasn’t a bad character, per se, but there wasn’t really anything about him that stood out. He was uninteresting and underdeveloped, and the fact that he wound up being completely overshadowed in his own game didn’t help his case. Despite that, when Dual Destinies was announced, I hoped that he would return. Continue reading
