My VG Music Picks #66 – Tomorrow Hill/Falling Off Tomorrow Hill (WarioWare: Smooth Moves)

There is a surprising amount of vocal tracks in the WarioWare series. I dunno, I just find that strange; I never would have pegged a series like this to get that kind of content. But, these lyrical pieces are not only quite fitting but are easily some of the most popular and memorable music tracks from the series (probably because they last more than five seconds).

And while there’s a certain little witch whose theme song reigns supreme above the rest, I want to shift the focus to another one for the time being – specifically Tomorrow Hill from the Wii title, Smooth Moves. Continue reading

Five Franchises That Should Get a Warriors/Musou Spin-Off

Koei Tecmo and Omega Force kind of struck gold when they first created the Dynasty Warriors series back in 1997. It was such a simple formula that, despite being criticised by some for being TOO simple, found itself a very devoted fan-base. Nowadays there are so many bloody spin-offs of not just the main series but also ones centered around other franchises like Fist of the North Star, The Legend of Zelda and Fire Emblem to name a few.

I personally don’t have much experience with the series but I’ve enjoyed what games I have played because they’re flashy, satisfying and just overall fun to play. So naturally I want to see other franchises get a similar treatment. Let’s run through five of them right now, shall we? Continue reading

My VG Music Picks #65 – Bomb Rush Blush/Tidal Rush (Splatoon 2)

WARNING: The following article contains spoilers for Splatoon 2

I don’t know what I expected from Splatoon 2‘s single player mode. I guess I always figured it’d just be more of the same aside from one or two new additions. And, for the most part, that’s pretty much what I got. That being said, I was curious as to what the new final boss would be so I was initially disappointed that it was essentially the same boss from the first game. Fortunately, not only was this version much better in my opinion but it had even better music accompanying it. Continue reading

WarioWare Gold – Glorious, Gaming Goodness or Just Gross?

H2x1_3DS_WarioWareGold_image1600w

I never realised how much I missed playing WarioWare games until I tried out the demo for the latest entry – WarioWare Gold. It was like meeting up with an old friend you hadn’t seen in years and finding out that you’re still on the same wavelength and have a fun time together. And considering the last WarioWare game came out in 2013 (assuming you even count Game & Wario, that is), I feel that comparison is perfectly apt.

But is WarioWare Gold deserving of that name? Is it the game that long-time fans have been waiting for? Or is it just like Wario himself and full of hot air? How about I stop asking rhetorical questions and we get on with the review. Continue reading

My VG Music Picks #64 – Courtney Gears (Ratchet & Clank 3)

WARNING: The following article contains spoilers for Ratchet & Clank 3)

I’ve never really found any music from the Ratchet & Clank series to be particularly memorable. Their soundtracks have never been bad but they were clearly designed to be more atmospheric; they’re the kind of music you can enjoy in the moment rather than independent of the game. As you can probably guess by now, there is one exception – the boss battle music that plays during the fight against robot pop-star Courtney Gears. Continue reading

Mario Tennis Aces – A Superb Serve or A Fumbling Fault?

hero-home-fallback

I’ve never been the biggest fan of the Mario sports titles. Not because I think they’re bad or I don’t enjoy them; they just very rarely grab me. So Mario Tennis Aces must’ve done something right to reel me in. Between its fancy gameplay and seemingly deep single-player mode, I found myself getting more and more tempted to try it out, and after spending some time on the online demo they released (which I even recorded footage of here), I decided to grab a copy day one.

Now, funnily enough, I had no intention of reviewing this game since I didn’t think I’d have much to say about what is essentially a tennis simulator but the more I played, the more I started to feel… conflicted, if that’s the right word. So, is this game worthy of having the word “ace” in its title? Can I recommend it to those who have no interest in tennis? How come Bowser doesn’t get his own unique tennis outfit? … OK, maybe I can only answer two of those questions. Continue reading
