My VG Music Picks #52 – DISSIDIA 012 [duodecim] FINAL FANTASY [FINAL TRAILER] (Dissidia 012 Final Fantasy)

OK, can I quickly start off by saying that it took me ages to find this track’s official name because, Christ, there are SO many variations of this theme. Also, why is it written in all caps; it just looks obnoxious. ALSO also, if you’re wondering whether this can actually count as a VG Music Pick since it’s trailer music and not in the actual game, well, it is included on the game’s official soundtrack. Besides, my site, my rules.

Anyway, I’m a sucker for trailer music. With the right music behind it, I’ll find myself enjoying trailers for films and videogames I otherwise would have no interest in, especially when it’s perfectly synced with video footage. But even without accompanying visuals, this track arguably helps sell the game on its own and this is possibly the best variant of it.

It begins with the iconic Final Fantasy leitmotif, easing you in like a lullaby that reminds you of your love of the franchise, before almost throwing you into what sounds like a war march, which is fitting considering the game’s scenario. Things only get tenser and bombastic as the track goes on, culminating in its fierce use of drums and ominous chanting. I just love how it periodically slows down, only to immediately follow up with the epic horns – the second half of the track is easily my favourite part.

Not much else I can really say; listen to the track yourself and you’ll see that it’s one of those music pieces that words can’t really describe. Now, how about that new PS4 Dissidia, huh?
